Farzad Kamangar is an Iranian teacher, unionist and human rights activist, charged by the Revolutionary Court of Iran with being a terrorist (through alleged links to the PKK) and sentenced to death on no convincing evidence.
The international teachers’ union federation, Education International, has learned that Farzad has been taken from his political prisoner’s cell in Evin prison (where he has been tortured and denied medical treatment)Â today in preparation for execution by hanging. He may be executed in the next few hours – it is already afternoon in Iran.
LabourStart and EI are trying to organise a last-ditch email campaign to shine the spotlight on his case and ask the Iranian government to reconsider.
Please take just a second to send an email action to Tehran now. The odds for the campaign seem insurmountable, but sometimes that’s not a reason not to try.
UPDATE 9pm 26 Nov: I’ve heard that Farzad was not executed today (although others in the prison were), but know no more than that, or what’s going to happen to him tomorrow. LabourStart must have had a pretty big response – it looks like it knocked their server down today for a few hours – well done to them for getting back up again, and if you found you weren’t able to send a message, now’s your chance.
